When nature creates the result can be only fantastic

The Erimitis beach was built in 2008, until then it did not exist. It is the youngest bech of Greece as it was created due to a landslide caused by an earthquake and with the collapse of a huge rock the opening to the sea was formed. The waves in turn helped in the final formation of a beautiful beach with wild and imposing landscape and the locals took care of its access. Its coast includes white pebbles and its crystal clear waters have the characteristic blue and turquoise color of the Ionian. It is located between steep and imposing rocks that take your breath away looking up and late at night it is adorned by the beautiful sunset that fades on the horizon. It is not organized at all and for this reason it would be good to take with you the necessary food and drinks as well as equipment if you wish.Very close to the beach, only 2.5 km, you will find the eponymous Erimitis Bar Restaurant where you can dine or enjoy your drink or coffee.

To reach the beach you will follow the road Gaios-Lakka and after 2 km you will see a sign leading you to the left (after the Shell gas station) and after a while a dirt road awaits you and another sign leads you to the right. From there you have another 1-2 kilometers until you park your vehicle and follow the stairs for another 5 minutes and you have arrived. For those who do not want to drive on the dirt road, they can park at a point after the second sign and continue on foot for about 15-20 minutes.

Arriving in Paxos, you disembark at Gaios,

the capital of the island. A picturesque village with beautiful buildings of great British and Venetian influence that the Paxos received in the past. A walk in the port will be unforgettable. Along its entire length, luxury yachts and sailing boats are “moored” to be a particularly impressive spectacle and to create a very summery atmosphere. The port is natural and is protected by two islands, Agios Nikolaos and Panagia, which are located at a very short distance from the mainland, thus creating a floating corridor between them, a meniscus and therefore its northern and narrowest part. In Agios Nikolaos there is the castle that protected the area during the Venetian era, while on the island of Panagia, there is a church “Panagia ton Vellianiton” where most weddings are organized every summer.

From the main square you can board one of the many speedboats that make the route Paxoi-Antipaxoi. The distance is just 3nm and it will not take more than 10-15 minutes to reach the dreamy sandy beaches with turquoise waters Vrika and Voutumi. Another option is to take one of the boats that make the tour of the island and guide you to other attractions such as the caves, the most famous of which are the Blue Caves, Ypapanti and Achaea. For those who do not have time and need only a quick swim there is the beach of Gianna just 100 meters from the main square.

There is no lack of services and tourist offices, such as rent a car, scooters and boats rent for those who prefer to explore the beaches of the island on their own. With a simple walk you will find everything in front of you.

When it comes to shopping, in the alleys you will see many shops for all tastes and all needs. From simple souvenirs, beach items to expensive clothes and accessories. The market of Gaios really has nothing to envy as it lacks nothing.

For good food the options are many. From classic taverns with Greek menu, fish taverns with seafood

by local fishermen, Italian food as well as more gourmet restaurants for lovers of flavors.

The nightlife consists of several bars with foreign and Greek music with most being by the sea. The rhythms are not frantic but more fun for a quality night.

In short, Gaios has it all. For those who choose to stay there and be in the spotlight there are beautiful and luxurious apartments for all tastes where they can book their stay in Paxos.

The History Paxos Antipaxos

Mythology

According to the mythology Paxos was formed by the desire of Poseidon to create love nest for his lover Amphitrite. Then the God of the Sea (Poseidon) struck his trident the south edge of Corfu and The island of Paxos was formed. Hence the inspiration of the inhabitants to choose the trident as a symbol of the island.

History

The name Paxos came from the Phoenician word “paks”, which means geometric “trapezoid”, ie the island with a trapezoidal shape, as seen from the sea and from above. The history of Paxos is directly connected with that of Corfu.According to historical texts in 229 BC. the Corfiots were defeated by the Illyrians of Queen Tavta and with them  Paxos came under their occupation. From  13ththe century and in 1386 passed to the power of the Venetians.

The Venetian occupation lasted until the end of the18th century, the period which Paxos and Antipaxos threatened many times by pirates and plunder and for these reasons were built two castles, one in the Bay of Gaios on the island of St. Nicholas and one in Lakka. The Venetians themselves were the ones who intensively applied the cultivation of olives which was the main source of resources on the island, along with fishing, until the advent of tourism in the early 1970s.

Recent history

In 1797 the French expelled the Venetians, who were later replaced by the Russians and the Ottomans until 1801, when the autonomous state of the Seven United Islands was founded, which was the first form of Greek state since antiquity. The Paxos together with the Antipaxos had an independent participation in the state and their own emblem, the trident. From 1807 the State was overthrown by Napoleon and French rule until 1814 when powerful English forces led by the Greek Major Theodore Kolokotronis occupied the island and annexed it to the United Kingdom.

In 1821 Paxos participated in the Greek revolution. One of the revolutionary heroes of the island was the burlotier Georgios Anemogiannis who lost his life at the age of 23 in Nafpaktos, whose statue exists in the port of Gaios. After the founding of the Greek state, the people of Paxos followed the union with the rest of the Ionian Islands, which came on May 21, 1864.

There is a corresponding monument in the central square of Corfu.
